Still Alive

Hey all,

Yep, there's been no updates for a while, thanks to a new birth in the family and other important family business that's been taking up my time.

Half Assed is still going and there's be an update in the near future.

Hectic Schedule

Just to let everyone know, from now on, Half-Assed will be updated every Thursday. Unfortunately, I just don't have the time for two or three updates a week anymore.

Thanks for reading!

#008 "It's Behind You"

This one was tough to do, not for technical reasons, but just because there are so many ways this could have played out.

In the original idea, the G-Man floated past the window, holding a sign that said "Told you it was freaky"...and an un-fazed Breen ran to the window, asked a nearby guard for his weapon...and shot out the balloons.

In the end, I decided that because Breen ended with the upper hand in the first G-Man comic I did (Issue 2, if you wanna check it out)...this time the G-Man got to finish on top instead.

Kinda a shame because both are pretty funny, but publishing one negates publishing the other.

Only real 'production' notes this time is I really wanted Breen to scream when the G-Man pops out on him...but nothing looked right.

I also need to find a better way to convey the idea of motion...although my 'masked motion blur' technique worked pretty well in this one.

#007 "No Atheists in Foxholes"

Ugh...ok, this one fought me all the way.

First of all, I was halfway through before I realized I'd be a panel 'over' if I completed it the way I had it planned. The I forgot to turn off the NPC AI and got attacked by a poison headcrab halfway through posing one of the panel...then Gmod crashed.

Suffice it to say, a couple hours in, I just wanted to be DONE with this one.

In other words, this comic doesn't flow quite as well as it should, and I employed various 'cheats' in places...and the posing isn't my best work.

In other news, I'd just like to thank everyone for the awesome way in which 'Half-Assed' has been recieved. I'm already getting a couple hundred hits per day, and I haven't had a comic rated below a five.

Thanks to everyone for their support, and I hope you'll all still be reading when I'm posting the hundredth issue!

#006 "No Goddamned Sense"

Ok, most of today's comic is pretty self-explanatory whether you've played HL2 or not.

The one I want to draw attention to is panel 5, the head crab rockets.

As you're playing HL you'll come across sequences where the area you're in gets 'shelled' by rockets that are filled with head-crabs. The rockets hit the ground, pop open, and four or five head-crabs jump out. The Ravenholme sequence shows just what these can do.

I was playing HL2 through again the other day and I just thought...what's the point?

Think about it. The Combine are attacking an enemy made up primarily of terrified, unarmed people. This is a weapon that takes those terrified, unarmed people...and turns them into fearless zombies with GIGANTIC claws that attack both human and combine indiscriminately. Considering you're going to have to clear the place out one way or another...why make your enemy stronger?

Yup, they're not the sharpest knives in the drawer.

As for technical notes, the only thing worth mentioning is panel 3, which was an absolute bitch.

I originally planned to set up a camera, then pilot the the air-boat myself, so it would have a nice wake behind it to show it was moving at speed. Unfortunately, you can't drive and snap a picture at the same time.

I tried everything from driving the thing then leaping out to snap the picture, setting off grenades behind the name it, I tried it.

I gave up and just took a picture of the stationary boat. In photoshop, I tried using a motion-blur filter along with a mask...but that meant you couldn't even SEE that the boat was a I ended up drawing in my own 'wake'.

It's not fantastic, but does the job.
